Loss, Grief, & Growth

Loss, Grief & Growth

The Loss, Grief and Growth Education project that OFSA, following the dreams of Past President, Yves Berthiaume, began more than 10 years ago, has come to its fruition.  In 2009, with the request from OFSA, The Funeral Service Association of Canada assumed management of the project and hired a Project Lead, Katherine Murray who officially launched LGG to Ontario funeral directors at OFSA's convention on September 28, 2010.

This fabulous education resource, provides educators with information, strategies and resources to support students who have and who will experience loss and grief.  The basic assumption is that loss is a part of life, grief is normal, healthy and adaptive response to loss, and through grief children can grown in inner and outer strength.  The focus of LGG is on loss associated with death, but the content can be applied to other losses.

A brief introduction discusses loss, grief as a "whole person" response to loss, factors that influence a child's grieving process, and suggests that children my be the "experts" at teaching us about their grieving.

"Tasks" provided teachers with activities to introduce students to loss, grief and ways to support one another.

"Teachable Moments" provide strategies for responding when death and loss occur in the school community, news, curriculum or larger community.

"Red Flags" identify behaviours that may indicate a need to refer a student for further supports.

"References and Resources" provides a helpful list of books, websites and resources for teacher, adults and children dealing with loss and grief.

"The Loss, Grief and Growth Manual is a straightforward and practical tool for educators and students.  It's strength lies in creating a rich foundation of understanding on childhood bereavement coupled with useful techniques to enhance a child's grief process.  Age appropriate lessons are provided based on a child's development understanding of death and loss.  This booklet also highlights cultural diversity, presents helpful resources, and underscores respect for students and teachers and their innate capacity to support resilience.  I would highly recommend this resource for the school community as a valuable guide in working with young people with issues of grief and loss."
